Fuck It! – Making P-32

The first installment of a two part series showing the creation of my painting, “Fuck It!”.

Video Link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yK3rfvvWKWI

The juxtaposition of the Hindu God Ganesha, hyper sexual fetish imagery and the wings of an angel, the piece erupted out of an intense experience I had five six months ago involving my day job, my personal life and the resolution the followed.

If you watch the video, do let me know what you think. I consider my art videos a part of the fished art I create—allowing an opportunity to experience my creations, along side me, as they’re undertaken.

Hope you enjoy,

My sketch for a new painting…

“Silly Rabbit” and this, “Nasty Pig”, are the first two paintings in what will be a triptych themed around animals holding sharp objects.

For the interested... I'm on an elements of horror kick, not sure where it's coming from, but its inspiring me to draw and paint these animals.

Paint doesn't break bones so I'm going with it...

After weeks of toil ad effort, I’m proud to present my documentary showing the step-by-step process I follow to create my lowbrow pop surrealist artwork. Filmed at double speed, the documentary begins at the inception of an idea and ends with the completion of a piece.

Spiritual Sexual Predator

An open response to Tantric M (http://people.tribe.net/894389d7-7e22-46a8-9137-b1edfb363dc1)

Let me tell you a story about me and LilShadow, the woman you called a liar on the Burningman Tribe (http://bm.tribe.net/thread/a6c9a2d1-5871-4fb9-a44e-b6a77591132b)

It's in our Testimonials to each other.
I asked her to be a friend.. She said no. I accepted that. I didn't ask again and again. I respect women. Hell...I respect people!
We met on the Playa, held hands, and drank blood together.
We have been fast friends ever since. Walking each other through some seriously tough times, laughing and sharing the good. Talking on the phone at least once a month ever since.
She is an Angel!
One thing she has never done is lie. To me, or to anyone I know.

You questioned the integrity of a good woman. That was your first mistake.
Your second was picking on someone that you thought was weak.

Since then, I have been contacted by other women that you have preyed on.
One has only to look at some of the degrading photo's of women, of seriously sick Porn mixed in with 'Prayer Wheels' to see your character.
Personally...I think you are a new phenomenon.
The 'Spiritual Sexual Predator'.
I just evicted one from the Ranch I'm on. (See my Blog)((http://people.tribe.net/kamikazekelly/blog/04c57133-1265-4eb0-b6ad-3354f26a738b#comments)) He, like you, was pathetic. Spouting New Age buzz words as a self described 'Enlightened Master' while eating our food, not working, and hitting on jail bait.
Every woman felt creeped out (like the women on Tribe I've talked to) 'hit on' by a dirty old Hippy.
Sound familiar??
Many women have come to me with tales of you.
Your actions speak much louder than your words.
Your past is verified by several independent sources.
Abuse has been notified.
If any other women than the 8 tonite who have contacted me want to speak to this issue, an issue (in my opinion) of a 'Spiritual Sexual Predator', please band together, speak out, and notify abuse at
www.abuse@tribe.net
KK
ps
I intend to cross post this on every Tribe that Tantric M subscribes to. If it gets me kicked off Tribe...so be it.
My intentions are as if I were a Father watching out for my Daughter.

diy:mia is the product of people made anxious by passive one way media, people who question mass production and its impersonal interaction, people both drawn and hostile to the popular culture surrounding them. It is about finding modes of creative expression and participation in a self-conscious and self-absorbed world. We strive to transform our commodity infested culture into a sensual, collectively generated, ever-changing experience obtained through returning the tools of creation, distribution, communication, and collaboration into the hands of any person willing to use them. We believe that the creation and publication of one's own design is the practice of free society, the right and obligation of a culture of interaction not merely consumption. We make, share, discuss, improvise, remix, mutate and add to the world around us. We ask you to do the same.
I just want to trade for good reading copies of issues I need as long as they are in reasonably good shape with no major tears, creases or missing parts! Drop me a line at tinlitho@suddenlink.net if you're interested in trading. I'm an honest, no-hassle trader and easy to deal with!

I have the following issues for trade:
I recieved my copy two weeks ago, and it looks just beautiful. Jon Beinart has done a superb job on the book. It looks every bit professional. I've spoken to a number of the other artists included in the book and they are all just as equally excited. It is truely inspirational to see so many wonderful artists creating works of such quality and power.

Metamorphosis shows us how wide and varied the visions are of the artists working in this vein of art.

More detailed information about the book can be found on the following website http://beinart.org/shop/metamorphosis.php

Thoughts on UNAUTHORISED COPYING of SHAG and MARK RYDEN art??

OK, it happens all the time I know......but when you start to see the art of your lowbrow/underground favourites being blatantly copied for others profiteering (is that a word?) it really hits a nerve!

Not so long ago I saw dodgy shag coasters at a major local grocery chain down here in Australia....on further inspection I noticed they were mass produced (or should I say mass ripped off) from China. My sister-in-law actually bought a set, unknowingly, because they looked
"kool"......she had never heard of Shag beforeI I later found out Outre gallery here in Oz who represent Shag and Ryden etc. did their best to put a stop to the importation of them!

While searchin for tiki mugs on ebay a few days ago I came across Mark Ryden's piece "Tiki God" being offered as an iron on transfer. On further inspection I realised this was not only an unauthorised item, they hadn't even given the artist any credit! I immediately contacted the seller and explained that it was wrong and a breach of copywright. They replied saying they had purchased the item "unaware"......but the story did'nt wash with me because they also offered an enlarging service and in their "sellers other items" had several more very familiar designs on offer!

Anyway, they basically were not too fazed by my concerns and the item continues to be listed! Ya' see this shit really pisses me off, being an artist myself. I'd like to know your thoughts on this matter of shamefully copying & profiting from others hard work?

to check out this item on ebay.....& send 'em a message if ya don't like what ya see!

weird blows - call for submissions

weird (wîrd)
adj. weird·er, weird·est
1. Of, relating to, or suggestive of the preternatural or supernatural.
2. Of a strikingly odd or unusual character; strange.

blow (blō)
v. blew, blown, blow·ing, blows
1. To expel a current of air, as from the mouth or from a bellows.
2. slang. Sexual activity involving oral stimulation of one's partner's sex organs.

Weird Blows is an ongoing art project where people anonymously submit their bizarre sexual experiences. These will eventually be archived on an upcoming website for viewing purposes and certain experiences will be adapted into short videos that will also be placed on the website, recontextualizing these accounts through the lens of the pornography they can owe so much to.

You are invited to contribute your experiences to Weird Blows. Each experience can be fondly-remembered or otherwise and it can be based in reality or fantasy or somewhere in between. Possible themes for the experiences are not limited to accounts of oral sex or heteronormative relationships. There are also varying degrees of weirdness; one person's kink is another person's vanilla. What really matters is that the experience you submit is true.

We have only one suggestion:

Be descriptive! One or two-sentence experiences all tend to sound the same.

Mail your experiences to weirdblows@gmail.com or send them, postal-style, to:

Weird Blows

If any of you happen to be in the Denver area, you really should get down to my friend's gallery on Santa Fe. The inaugural show has got over 80 original pieces from all over the genre. Audrey Kawasaki, Joe Sorren, Jeff Soto, Lyle Motley, Blaine Fontana, Tim Biskup, BUA... many too many to list. Definitely worth stopping by if you're in the area.

In fact they almost got rid of the comments thread a couple of weeks ago. Does anybody else follow it? If so, what do you think? Has anybody here been featured on JUXTAPOZ?

SAIL THE MED WITH CRESTIVE PEOPLE

Beginning in March next year, we are inviting 9 people to cruise from Bodrum, Turkey along the Turkish coast, Cyprus, Athens, Alexandria on a share expenses basis (very, very inexpensive). We began a documentary in Paris and Turkey last year, and now as it gets warmer in Turkey we are going to complete it. We have a US distributor, and everyone involved will share in profits. It could be quite profitable for you and a real life changer. We are in pre-production of three others...one on black jazz in Paris after WWII until now. We have a Turkish captain/crew/cook on our 70' Gulet, 6 double staterooms still available, all with their own head (toilet and shower). Qualifications? Simply to be able to get along with people. Age? Our producer is 60, our editor is 25. Age inmaterial if you are young in spirit. If you have video experience (HD MiniDV PAL and Final Cut Pro, writing) all the better, but we are doing this to perhaps expand the focus of our documentary which is based on the mystical aspects of Alexander the Great - Title: Force of Evidence. Creative people get free reign as long as they don't sink the ship or the project. We are interested to add some human interest...profound, provocative, funny...to the program, so film making experience in not a requirement. Come for a week or two months. Email me for details.

Met Robert & Suzanne Williams at the Primer Nationals

I was very obsequious and stumble mouthed. I spoke to Suzanne first and called her suzan and was corrected. Name dropped some LA artists, first Lorser Fiedleson, who I did not know, he was one of the first hard edge LA artists from the 40's & 50's I think. Go ahead and correct me. It was akward and they were hawking their wairs. I bought a R.W. poster and some post cards & gallery tracts from Susanne and the January Juxtapoz.
The Primer Nat.s had alot of nice cars and pickups for my taste, some not so great IMO. Some real good MC's. A friend of mine who builds bikes had 'Skratch' do some impressive traditional pinstriping on two of his bikes (actually customer's bikes). He also got a third place with one of his bikes he's trying to sell me. I'm not sold yet.

To me there is a lack of real creativity in this show. Every one dresses like a 50's rocker, or what they and the current 'rockabilly' media think is a retro rocker. I am attracted to the history and material culture of that period. It get's boring when there's a standard that is apparent at these shows that kinda makes things look the same.
In spite of that I liked the show and enjoyed meeting Robert & Suzanne. There was some creative and different sh^t there.

FREE SETH D8 ART!

Get your FREE, personal use, Seth D8 art hot off the presses!

Announcing the launch of my FREE Seth D8 art print source!

As an artisan I have two categories I work in, digital illustration and commercial graphic design. I have chosen to freely share my digital illustration with anyone whom would like a print. I have plenty of commercial clients to satisfy my financial needs, plus I know I will always have all of needs met in every way before I have even asked. I love sharing my digital illustration because when a person is drawn to a piece incidental love is created and the love of creation is reflected back to me. And I love, LOVE!

I have uploaded a large selection of my digital art in hi resolution format to shutterfly.com, I have also set up a page their to access and order the prints. They offer everything from 4x6 prints to 24x36 inch prints in amazing detail and color. You can even create your very own Seth D8 art book of your favorite pieces, all for very reasonable rates. The only cost involved is the production of the prints, and I do not get a cut or add a commission to the service. It is at cost, and my art is completely free for personal use.

Please feel free and browse my current selection and get prints of anything you like, and the best part is you get to be part of the creative process by choosing exactly the correct size and media to suit your need. I will be uploading new hi resolution images a couple times a month so be sure and subscribe to my new Artisantastic illustration RSS feed. When I produce a new image it is immeaditly added to the feed, so you will always be up to date with my latest creations. And believe me I am a prolific artist creating new pieces on a daily basis.

Anyone besides me notice on the back spread on SXSW, that Henry Rollins was standing next to a scary clown pirate...Now the odd thing was that I read this fear and uncertainty and a plea in his eyes that just struck me as "different" for our BlackFlag Man. I started looking and God be damned if Henry didn't have a hard on with his hand in his pocket standing next to this scary ass pirate clown.... or was it all a dreeeeaaammmmm

Third anniversary show at Varnish

3 to the Third---Brian Elliot, Kevin Evans & Liz Orleans

From April 18th to June 3rd, 2006

Opening Reception: Saturday April 22, 7-11pm

This third anniversary show at Varnish features cast metal sculptor Brian Elliot's Bay Area debut, intaglio printmaker Kevin Evans and ceramic sculptor/installation artist Liz Orleans.

Each of Brian Elliot's cast metal pieces---about 27" high, 11" deep and 18" wide---have an improbable charisma and beauty to them, which is only enhanced by the lightness of their appearance. These brave ladies, like a fleet of demure, feminine Zeppelins, look as if they might float away unless tethered. Brian Elliot is influenced by Gaudi's passion and overstatement, Harrell Fletcher's elevation of the seemingly ordinary and banal into ingenious and respectful looks at the human condition, the aesthetics of Popular Mechanics magazine prior to 1950, Terry Gilliam's fascination with puppet-like creations, as well as the glorious high fashion of Issey Miyake.

Sculptor Elizabeth Orleans works in clay and tells "ceramic tales." She is inclined to pair visual and tactile structures like smooth, orbed surfaces along with crusty exteriors in order to excite what she calls, "visual sensations." "I want," says Orleans, "to illustrate the visual stimulation you get from seeing paint peeling, metal rusting or moss growing." These ceramic tales reflect the currents or ravages of time and/or evolution. At first glance some of them look like they could have come from the ocean, but upon closer inspection, reveal the telltale clues of an unfolding story.

In his painting and other work Kevin Evans looks to the concealed natural world for inspiration. He moves forward through projects with a combination of instinct and imagination. "It is," says Evans, "an unpredictable voyage toward an unpredictable outcome." The images, especially in his intaglio work, often seem dense and riddled with a structural mystery that resists explanation. It's easy to imagine they might be only recently discovered but still unexplained plans of a Michelangelo.

+ This is an open invitation to all artisans and creative folks. We have begun a new website, http://observeourlight.com which is a portal to a collective on-line artisan coconsciousness stream. As our world evolves, so does our art. Let this site be an ultimate expression of change. I have iniated the spark and invite others to join me by adding there observations to the stream and making our light shine brighter as each new version is created. And I thank Phil for all of his assistance for without his 1/2 of the art this vision would never come to life.

Does anyone know when Jeff Soto's first toy, "Walker", is going to be released? I saw a Critterbox ad for it in the most recent Juxtapoz, but there was no release date listed and when I checked the site there was no mention of it at all. Anyone got the inside scoop?

September Featured Artist

It's that time again!

I can't tell you how much I have enjoyed doing these, and I hope the same can be said for all of you who read and contribute to this tribe. For me, personally I enjoy getting to know a little about the artist behind the art and the thought process that goes on behind the scenes. Thanks to everyone who has contributed so far, it's been a real pleasure!

This month's featured artist is Grant Bruckner (liquid Chicken here on Tribe). He's fresh, multi-talented and a very expressive artist. I hope you enjoy the interview and his work, as much as, I have.

*******************************************************************

How long have you been an artist?

First off, thanks for taking the time to interview me Scott. It’s been a pleasure knowing you through Tribe. Also I wanted to let every one know, that over the last week, I've created a series of work to accompany this interview. Check it out! It’s posted in the tribe’s photo section, as well as mine. The work is pen and ink on 3.5"x5" Maple Veneer. It’s a bit of a study into the POP Surrealism genera. My influences, as well as resource material, came from the following people. Mark Ryder, Robert Crumb, Tiffany Bozic, Jonathan Solo, Michael Hussar and Heiko Mueller. I also used resource material from Pin Up Model photos and Japanese Anima.

To answer your question Scott, my first memories of really loving to draw start around the age of six. My brother and I would draw giant Pac Man's and decorate them. We'd add teeth, Crazy hair, earrings and whatever else we could think of. If you count my toddler days of markers on the walls, I'd say I've been at it all my life.

What made you decide to be an artist?

Being creative makes me feel like I'm really participating in life and its very comfortable to make art. Comfort, is most likely the deciding factor. For the most part I think it’s in every ones nature to be creative...I don't think I actually made the decision one day to be an artist. I do remember a day in my early teenage years when I was drawing, and felt a tremendous joy in the art, at that moment; I knew art was the rest of my life. That was a great day.

Any formal training?

My Mom put me in a Waldorf school in the Fourth grade. They’re big on the arts. That was the only school I ever liked. Then it was Public High, where not much was accomplished. My friends and I mostly sat on the hill, cutting class, smoking weed and drinking beer. I dropped out, got my GED and followed the Grateful Dead. After that it was In and out of J.C. art classes with my interest in printmaking, painting and drawing. Completed a semester at California Collage of Arts and Crafts and that's about it.
My most recent schooling was in steel sculpture. I loved it but don't have the space to continue the work.. Sooooooo…Ya, some formal training.

What is your preferred medium?painting/drawing/sculpture/computer graphics/etc

If I was on my death bed, pen and black ink would be my preferred medium. Drawing has always been my strongest ability. Currently water color and ink are my Passion. Most of the last two years have been absorbed by my children's book series The Something From Nothing Trilogy, all done in water color and ink 130 something illustrations on 11"x14" water color paper. Lots of those images can be seen in my tribe photos. They are quit a bit smaller then the originals and miss lots of the finer work. Writing the books is a part of art I decided is not for me after many drafts I have given the job over to my friend Miho Reis.
Other then that I'm really into a full spectrum media. Lighting, sound, performance, back ground visuals, it all turns me on. My instillation work can be found on my web sight www.bluebunnybee.com under the DOME category. It’s called Seven Atmospheres and has been in the works for about 5 years. Real bitch to maintain, but I love it.
Seven Atmospheres incorporates my steel sculpture, lighting, sound and performance abilities. Instillation is the direction I'm moving, however it takes money, space and lots of time. I apologize for my web, it's not fast loading. Another ones in the oven as we speak. It will be up in a few days and is much more mature.

Who are your influences?

Recently my influences are the ones stated above. Otherwise it’s a bit allover the place. Some days I'm into certain artists on other days I’m not.

Where do your subject ideas come from?

Well, for my most recent work you see in Tribe, my subjects where images of other artist work that I admire and love. I hope it is plane to see that I was not attempting to copy or steal the ideas of the artiest I drew from. I love and respect the images and wanted to experience and express those worlds with my own style.
I've spent lots of time in my past especially in painting, attempting to stay clear of subject matter. The outcome is very atmospheric. It's a lot of fun painting this way because I never finish the work without thinking of some subject matter. They are very brief moments, but the out come always interest me because people are always finding all sorts of figures floating around, most of which relate to there personal interest. I see my own. Most of the time people can’t see what the other person sees.

How long does it normally take you create a piece from concept to reality?

I have made lots of work in seconds. The little works in the tribe gallery took about twenty to thirty minutes a piece. My Children's Book series is a bit of a nightmare. It’s taken two and a half years to get it where it is. For example, I first draw each border on the illustrations, that takes about two hours of non-stop work, then I outline the image in ink, fill in the image with color and go back and detail it with ink. In all, each illustration takes between six to ten hours. My installation, Seven Atmospheres is a different story all together. It’s been shown maybe four or five times, but is also being added on to and changed each time, so in that sense, it’s never done. It originally started off as just two 4'x8' paintings five years ago.
Time is a huge component in art, and in the past, I have not paid much attention to it, but the older I get, the more time becomes a factor. Maybe when I am really old, I will lose the idea of time again. (We can only hope that happens to us all Grant!)

Do you have a website(s)?

Yes, www.bluebunnybee.com

Galleries?

No

(Well not quite, as some of you have read, Grant has posted a fairly substantial body of work, to go along with the interview. In a sense, the tribe photo section is serving as Grant’s first digital gallery opening. So, welcome to the Grant Bruckner inaugural gallery reception. Please help yourselves to the snacks, commence with the cool conversation and please comment, give the love but don't touch! Grant's stuff is too hot for mere mortal hands!)

And because I’m nosey and a little sleep deprived, a few more less formal questions to finish up with:

Describe a typical day….

Oat-meal, tea, banana, shower, toothpaste, computer, work, art, art, work, food, zone out, work, art, art, art, dinner, art, art, Sleep……….

Butter, Margarine, or are you trying to kill me? Please slather mine with Crisco…

Butter I think, I try not to kill and if we where in the country my wife would be named Margarine.

*******************************************************************

Thanks Grant! (liquid Chicken!)

And please, if you have gotten this far drop me a PM, if you have any ideas or questions you would like answered, so that I can continue to make this a worthwhile endeavor for everyone.

Hi folks:

I wanted to invite all in the Chicago area to come out the opening party of "Werewolf Bongo Party" at the DvA Gallery.
My husband, Jamio along with 30 other artists (the biggest group show the gallery has held to date), will be featuring art for the galleries Halloween themed show.

Look for more details in the next issue of Juxtapoz (there will be an ad running, I believe), or visit http://www.dvagallery.com

I am so delighted that Jami was invited to be a part of this outstanding show, so we're flying out to the opening from CA. I truly hope some of you from the area can make it out on opening night. It should be a riot!

Kind regards,

Rae and Jamio

yeah, it came out years ago but still, many people havent heard/heard of it...Chocolate Industries put out this compilation in hopes of bridging music, art and city life together in one project. musically, such artists as Prefuse 73, El-P, Diverse, Miho Hatori, Tortoise, Aesop Rock, and many others add their city soundscapes in a radio program format. the arts side of the project includes such notables as KAWS, Dalek, and Struggle Inc.

“Flower Head” reflects upon my love of the outdoors in general and my longing for and reminiscence of a small coastal town I lived in for two years specifically.

As with all of my paintings, there is representation imbedded throughout…

For instance the clockwise rotation of the flower petal colors to stamen colors represent time, and the grimaced mouth represents the mix of feelings I have regarding my time spent along the coast --- primarily ambivalence woven between isolation, loneliness, longing and beauty.

*warning slight rant*

this tribe has grown 125% over the last 6 months, we are now at 876 members, the picture gallery has tripled in size with contributions and yet i only see a handful of people ever make any comments or participate in the group. everyday i see at any one time, 30 to 40 people online and on tribe so what's the deal? there must be some interest with the membership numbers growing but the lack of actual participation is frustrating.

even just a simple thanks to some of the events that are listed or a "nice job" on some of the art would be encouraging.

An artist’s statement…

For as long as I can remember, I’ve been fascinated by the dialogue of the human form --- from the subtly of the surreptitious smile, to sheepishly pigeon-toed feet, to the intensity of a grimacing face connected to a body in full stride. The unmitigated body and all its seen parts move me to paint. Stripping away identify, my interest is to use the genderless human form as a vehicle of emotion, situation and place. To visually illustrate and unlimitedly process the multitude of feelings I have about my self, life, others and the world around me.

The following is piece is entitled "The Blame Game". It reflects upon the fights between parents, which play out before their children.

http://orsay.tribe.net/tribe/upload/photo/fdc/683/fdc683b3-ca7e-42f2-a172-07a4b32f501a

Inspiration was the following Hindu Proverb: "When elephants fight... It is the grass that suffers the most."

Feedback regarding "The Blame Game" or any other example of my work will not only be respectfully received, but massively appreciated.

Thanks,

THE BURNING OF THE PICTURE OF EVERYTHING

Hi folks. I'm burning my original artwork called The Picture of Everything (http://www.thepictureofeverything.com) this coming Sunday and was wondering if anyone knows a nice place besides Dockweiler Beach to do it. Apparently they've really been cracking down on beach burns this year and, seeing that it's going to be in the morning on 9/11, might attract a bit of attention.

The 4 sections of the picture each measure around 44 inches by 72 inches, and are on rolls of paper that can be ripped or bunched up before igniting. I want the whole thing on film, so if anyone can video tape it and transfer it to Quicktime the same day, I'll give you some money for your time.

Thanks

August Featured Artist!

Between house hunting, a move (another one coming up in September to the our house), living out of a suitcase, illness, job requirements etc, it seems life has managed to, once again, get in the way of all the fun projects I’ve had planned, so here it is several months down the road, since our first featured artist. The good news is that I’ve got several more interviews in the queue with some very talented members and hopefully several more on the way. So here we go……

****************************************************************
Heiko Mueller is our second featured artist hailing from Hamburg Germany. Over the last year I’ve gotten to know Heiko very well through email and im’s and I feel I can say with uncertainty that he has got to be one of the nicest people you will ever meet. Extremely talented in a multitude of mediums, a hardworking family man and one of nicest looking German artists I’ve met (well, of the two I know!).

How long have you been an artist?

Although my parents always supported my artistic inclinations, strangely enough at the same time they always seemed to think artists were layabouts and social parasites. This kind of paranoia somehow passed on to me – I have trouble calling myself openly an artist. I prefer to describe myself as a designer. I only feel like an artist when I have an exhibition. I had my first one at the age of 18, in 1986.

What made you decide to be an artist?

Who says I’m an artist?
When I stopped painting about seven years ago, I seriously wanted to leave that entire artist world behind me. From there on I concentrated on digital design, thinking I was focusing exclusively on applied arts. But at some stage I started to paint religious icons in Photoshop, and then it took me another year to realize that this has actually little to do with applied arts and is pretty free after all. So apparently it isn’t really up to me to decide whether I’m an artist. It seems to be something beyond my personal decision.

Any formal training?

I was very lucky to be able to visit one of the best illustrators’ schools in Europe. At that time I basically drew or painted in acryl. Today, as I said, I mostly work digitally or paint in oil.

What is your preferred medium? painting/drawing/sculpture/computer graphics/etc

At the moment I’m mostly into oil painting but I also love to work with Photoshop and to draw with crayons. My favorite crayon brand is actually from the U.S.: Prismacolor. I really appreciate this kind of top-notch material.

Who are your influences?

I draw a lot of inspiration out of historical icons (whose artists are mostly not known by name). I also appreciate some of the Flemish masters and am also an admirer of Mexican culture. Contemporary artists on top of my list are Manuel Ocampo, Jeff Soto, Mark Ryden, Gary Baseman, Beattie & Davidson, Fred Stonehouse, Charles Glaubitz, Mike Burnett, and many more. I also love Daniel Clowes’ and Charles Burns’ graphic novels.

Where do your subject ideas come from?

They’re mostly taken from memories. I’m a nostalgic person and like to talk with friends about old days. In the process of painting a similar thing happens. Sometimes however I realize that not all of my ideas stem exclusively from my head. Now and then other artists’ motifs sneak in and simply claim they’re mine. For instance I was absolutely happy when I had that idea about a block of wood as a pet ( http://tinyurl.com/7mrbf ) and only later I noticed that I must have seen a similar figure in one of Jeff Soto’s works.

Do you have a website(s)?

I have many. My personal website is www.heikomueller.de, I show parts of my art collection on www.artstore24.com. Apart from that I built a small virtual world with two friends on www.pxp2000.com, the site introducing us as a team being www.pxpress.com.

Galleries?

Here in Hamburg my stuff is sold in a small but excellent underground gallery by the name of Feinkost Krüger. Besides local artists it also presents people like Marco Almera, COOP, Jay Ryan, Derek Hess and Van Arno, so I consider myself in pretty good company there.

Just for fun:

Describe a typical day….

Usually I get up at 8am, have breakfast with my wife and my son, skim through the newspaper. At about 10 I’ll be in the office where I mostly work on websites, CD-ROMs, DVDs and PowerPoint presentations. Normally I grant myself one hour for lunch break, then I’ll continue to work until 7 pm. Back home, I play with my son until it’s bedtime for him or go jogging for a bit. I’ll turn to art after that, working at the computer on my icons or painting in the little studio I made for myself in the basement.

Earth Fire Water or Wind? And why?

Earth. I think I like to have both feet on the ground. Besides I love the smell of earth.

Thanks Heiko!!!
***************************************************************
end interview

....so are there any other questions any of you would like to see answered that hasn’t been asked?
